Understanding the Rotten Smell in Your Home

Once you've ruled out the obvious kitchen suspects, a lingering rotten-meat smell almost always has a hidden organic source. The heavy, meaty quality of the odor comes from anaerobic decomposition, the breakdown of tissue without oxygen, which is exactly what happens to an animal that dies inside an enclosed space. The question then becomes where, and the answer is usually written into where the smell is strongest.

Common hidden sources include:

• A dead rodent in a wall, floor, or ceiling cavity.
• A carcass in or near ductwork, which spreads the smell house-wide.
• Accumulated droppings or nesting in a hidden void.
• A plumbing issue, which can mimic decay (covered below).

Rotten Smell From Vents vs. Walls vs. Under the House

Where it's strongest tells you a great deal. If the smell surges every time the heating or cooling runs and seems to come from the registers, the source is likely in the ductwork or HVAC unit: see vent and HVAC smells. If it's concentrated against one wall and doesn't change when the system cycles, you're probably dealing with a carcass in a stud bay: see dead animal odor. If it rises from the floor in a ground-level room, the crawl space or subfloor is the place to check.

When It's Pests vs. Plumbing

Not every foul smell is a dead animal. A rotten-egg or sulfur note can be hydrogen sulfide from sewer gas rather than decay. The most common plumbing cause is a p-trap dry-out: a floor drain or seldom-used fixture whose water seal has evaporated, letting sewer gas back into the room. There's a simple test. Run water down every suspect drain and wait a day. If the smell eases, it was plumbing. If it doesn't budge, it's almost certainly organic and worth a pest inspection.
